READING

 Welcome to Reading!

In reading this year, we will be following the Reader's Workshop model.  This framework provides readers with opportunities to read "just right books" at their interest level, while they practice explicit reading strategies.  The ultimate goal of Readers Workshop is to develop independent, passionate, life-long readers!

Students will have independent reading time in school each day.  Every Monday through Thursday evening, students should read for at least 20 minutes and log their reading.  Weekend reading is encouraged.

Parent Resources:
  • Why Your Child Can't Skip Their 20 Minutes of Reading Tonight
  • Fifth Grade Range of Reading Levels: This document summarizes the characteristics of texts at the average fifth grade reading levels of T, U, and V.  This document is a fantastic resource to use when identifying the types of reading characteristics your child might exhibit.
  • Questions to Encourage Deep Thinking When Reading: This document gives examples of questions you can ask your child to intensify their thinking and understanding of their nightly reading.
